George H. McVey

George H. McVey, 94, of 575 Albany Ave., Dominican Village, Amityville, N.Y., a former part-time resident of Monterey, died Saturday at Brunswick Hospital in Amityville. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., on Oct. 17, 1908, son of Alfred and Pauline Muller McVey, he attended Jamaica Training School and Columbia Teachers’ College. He was a former resident of East Meadow, N.Y., and had resided part time in Monterey since the late 1950s. An educator and administrator, Mr. McVey was acting superintendent of schools in East Meadow School District when he retired in 1969. From 1958 to 1968, he had been assistant superintendent of schools at East Meadow. He also was chairman of the science department at John Adams High School in South Ozone Park until 1958. He was a member of the East Meadow Board of Education from 1948 to 1958. At his retirement, he was honored for his service to the district with the naming of the George H. McVey Elementary School. He was instrumental in assuring a smooth transition from a district of a few thousand students to one of more than 18,000 students. While in East Meadow, he was active in St. Raphael’s Church and a charter member of the Kiwanis Club. His wife, the former Kathryn Cummins, died Sept. 13, 1989. He leaves a daughter, Maureen Donohue of Dix Hills, N.Y.; a son, George R. McVey of Dix Hills, six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The family of George H. McVey will receive friends on Saturday, Aug. 23, from 10 until the time of the funeral at 11 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. The Rev. John S. Lis will officiate. Interment will follow immediately at Corashire Cemetery in Monterey.
