Ethel L. Diehl

Ethel L. Diehl, 96, of Lovers Lane Road died Friday at Springside of Pittsfield, where she had resided for three months. Born in Haverstraw, N.Y., on May 10, 1907, daughter of Joseph H. and Jennie L. Halloway Bedford, she was a graduate of Haverstraw High School in Stony Point, N.Y. She moved to Washington in 1974. Mrs. Diehl was the dispatcher for the Washington Police Department from 1980 until 1994. She worked for her father’s insurance agency from 1951 to 1956 and at the former New York Telephone Co. from 1957 until 1974. She was an active member of First Congregational Church in Dalton. She also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers of America. While in Stony Point, she had been a member and longtime treasurer of the Order of Eastern Star since 1928. She also was a 15-year member of the Stony Point ambulance corps. Her husband, John F. Diehl, whom she married July 18, 1967, died Aug. 5, 1984. She leaves a stepson, John P. Diehl of Reo Rancho, N.M., and a stepdaughter, Catherine Diehl of Long Island, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Ethel Diehl will be conducted Monday at 7 p.m. at BARTLETT-WELLINGTON FUNERAL HOME in Dalton by the Rev. Robert R. Kyte, pastor of First Congregational Church. Burial will be Tuesday at 11 in Oak Hill Cemetery in Nyack, N.Y. Calling hours will be Monday from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested to either the Shriners or to the Dalton Congregational Church Memorial Fund in care of the funeral home, 525 Main St., Dalton, MA 01226.
