Lillian Alice LaPlante

Lillian Alice LaPlante, 93, of 248 Green River Road, Greenfield, a former resident of North Adams, died Tuesday evening at Poet's Seat Nursing Home in Greenfield. She and her husband, the late William F. LaPlante, owned and operated the former Modern Dairy Snack Bar. Born in Lynn on April 12, 1910, daughter of Frederick and Helen LaBrecque Bell, she attended schools there and in Claremont, N.H., where she graduated from St. Mary's School in 1925. She moved to North Adams in 1934 from Milwaukee, where she lived during her early years. Mrs. LaPlante also owned and operated Personal Answering Service in her home until selling it in 1974. She had first worked for the former Sprague Electric Co. as a civilian customer inspector. She was a communicant of St. Francis' Church. She was a member of the North Adams Garden Club and had served as its president several times. She was active in the community and enjoyed volunteer and civic work and was a former member of the League of Women Voters. In 2000, Mrs. LaPlante received the Massachusetts Civic Award for her design of the park on Route 2 in North Adams. She was a founding member and past president of the Emblem Club and served as state president in 1972 and 1973. She also held offices in the Supreme Association of Emblem Clubs. Her husband, whom she married in 1928, died April 6, 1964. She leaves two grandchildren, Karen L. Taylor of Greenfield, with whom she made her home, and Richard J. Falkouski of Tampa, Fla., and two great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Helene Falkouski, died Aug. 16, 2001. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Lillian LaPlante will be Tuesday, Sept. 30, at 10:15 from FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, followed by a Funeral Mass at 11 at St. Francis' Church. Burial will be in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours will be Monday from 6 to 9 at the funeral home. Donations may be made to the Lillian B. LaPlante Scholarship at the North Adams Garden Club in care of the funeral home, 521 West Main St. Survivors include two grandchildren, Karen L. Taylor and her husband, Dr. David N. Taylor of Greenfield, and Richard Falkouski of Tampa, Fla.; and three great-grandchildren, Amanda, Jason and Cassandra Taylor. Her daughter, Helene Falkouski, died Aug. 16, 2001.
