Roger Maxwell Merchant

Roger Maxwell Merchant, 74, of 17 Balance Rock Road died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Boscawen, N.H., on Oct. 10, 1928, son of Nelson A. and Florence L. Clark Merchant, he attended schools there. An Air Force veteran, he served from 1946 to 1949, one year of that in Japan with the occupation forces. Mr. Merchant moved to Pittsfield in 1957 and was employed in the maintenance department at Springside of Pittsfield nursing home, where he worked for 44 years. He retired in December 2001. He enjoyed golf, hunting, fishing and watching sports, especially the Red Sox. He leaves his companion of 41 years, Josephine Broderick; Ms. Broderick's daughter, Lori Broderick, with whom he resided; Ms. Broderick's son, Anthony Buzzanco of Bedford, N.Y.; two brothers, David Merchant of Lansing, Mich., and Kenneth Merchant of Springfield, and a sister, Barbara Putnam of Greenfield. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Roger Maxwell Merchant, 74, died Sept. 27, 2003. In keeping with his wishes, there will be no funeral services. Following cremation, inurnment will take place in St. Michael the Archangel Mausoleum at St. Joseph's Cemetery. He will be missed by his loving grandchildren, Leah Smith of Westfield and Joel Smith of Lanesboro. He was predeceased by two brothers, Richard and Robert Merchant. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, donations in his memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society in care of DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, 40 Maplewood Ave., Pittsfield, MA 01201.
