John W. "Jack" Elmendorf

John W. "Jack" Elmendorf, 95, a longtime resident of Delmar, N.Y., died yesterday at Good Samaritan Nursing Home in Delmar, following a brief illness. He was the father of Donna Shapiro of Stockbridge. Born in Schenectady, N.Y., on June 12, 1908, son of Andrew and May Gidley Elmendorf, he graduated from Pratt Institute with a degree in engineering. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a platoon sergeant at Fort Hood, Texas. He retired as president of Westover Wolfe Heating and Air-Conditioning, where he had also been employed. He had worked for a short time at GE in Schenectady. An avid outdoorsman, he enjoyed golf and was a member of the Normanside Country Club in Delmar. In his later years, he became a nature photographer. Besides his daughter, he leaves his wife of 67 years, the former Alsha McCourt, a son, Lee Elmendorf of Latham, N.Y., and four grandsons. Another son, Andrew David Elmendorf, is deceased. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A funeral service for John Elmendorf will be Friday at 11 at the APPLEBEE FUNERAL HOME, 403 Kenwood Ave., Delmar. Relatives and friends are invited to call beginning at 10 at the funeral home. Burial will be in Bethlehem Cemetery, Delmar. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Berkshire Country Day School, P.O. Box 867, Lenox, MA 01240. He also leaves his son-in-law, Dr. Edward Shapiro; his daughter-in-law, Heidi; and four grandsons, Trevor, Joshua, Zachary and Jacob, and a niece, Joyce.
