Rita Mary McAndrews

Rita Mary McAndrews, 85, of 97 Columbia St. died Friday afternoon at Hillcrest Commons in Pittsfield, where she had resided since November 2002. Born in North Adams on April 18, 1918, daughter of Bartholomew B. and Mary Jane Ryan McAndrews, she was a 1936 graduate of the former Adams High School. She earned a bachelor of science degree in education from the former North Adams State Teachers College, now MCLA, in 1940 and a master's degree in education from Boston University in 1955. Miss McAndrews taught for 16 years in the Adams public schools, including the the former Commercial and Liberty Street grammar schools, retiring in 1972. She first taught Grade 5 in Mill River and was then a reading consultant in East Greenbush, N.Y. She was a communicant of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas, and a member of St. Thomas' Rosary Sodality and its prefect. She was a past grand regent of the Catholic Daughters of the Americas, holding all chairs in that organization. She leaves two brothers, John J. McAndrews of Adams and James P. McAndrews of Attleboro, and two sisters, Anne M. Ciuk and Marijane Pansecchi, both of Adams. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A Liturgy of Christian Burial for Rita Mary McAndrews, who died Nov. 7, 2003, will be celebrated Wednesday, Nov. 12, at 10 at St. Thomas Aquinas Church. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery. Calling hours will be Tuesday from 4 to 8 at MCBRIDE FUNERAL HOME, 2-8 Liberty St. in Adams. She also leaves seven nieces, 10 nephews, two grandnephews and a grandniece.
