Jennie Spingarn

Jennie Spingarn, 92, of Melbourne Place in Pittsfield, formerly of Lee, died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. She had resided at Melbourne since February. Born in Newark, N.J., on July 24, 1911, daughter of Morris and Sarah Goldman Grubel, she graduated from South Side High School in Newark, just prior to her 16th birthday. She later lived in Maplewood, N.J. She moved to Lee in 1976 and resided at 445 Fairview St., until later moving to the Village at Laurel Lake. Mrs. Spingarn had been employed for 18 years in the actuarial department of the Prudential Insurance Co. in New Jersey. From 1980 to 1990, she was a volunteer with the Lee Regional Visiting Nurse Association and made hand-painted thank-you notes for the organization's donors. She enjoyed sewing, knitting and crocheting. She had a longtime interest in painting and took lessons at the Newark Museum Arts workshop for nearly 10 years. Her husband, Aaron Spingarn, whom she married Nov. 11, 1942, died Dec. 20, 1980. She leaves a daughter, Rosalyn S. Cohen of Lee; two sisters, Florence Fulwiler of Milton, Fla., and Rose LaBella of Pensacola, Fla., two grandchildren and two great-grandsons. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Jennie Spingarn, who died Nov. 19, 2003, will be conducted Friday at 1 at KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee by Rabbi Dennis S. Ross of Temple Anshe Amunim in Pittsfield. The family will receive friends from 12:30 until the time of the service. A period of mourning will be observed at the Cohen residence at 430 Fairview St., Lee, from Friday until Monday evening. In lieu of flowers, those wishing may make donations to the Alzheimer's Association, HospiceCare in the Berkshires, or the Lee Regional Visiting Nurse Association in care of the funeral home. She leaves her beloved grandchildren, Rachel and Jonathan; her great-grandsons, Zachary and Samuel Kennedy; her devoted son-in-law, Fredric, and grandson-in-law, Marc Kennedy. She was predeceased by brothers, Edward and Jacob, and her sister, Sophie.
