Belle Gaffney, 93, of Chatham, N.Y., died Monday morning at the Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, where she had lived for the past two years. Born in Wilkes Barre, Pa., on March 1, 1910, daughter of Leo and Sally Fried, she attended schools in Bethlehem, Pa., and New York, where she graduated from George Washington High School. She worked for many years at the former New York Herald Tribune. She and her husband, Harry, bought an old Shaker home in Columbia County, where they spent weekends. Following the death of her husband, she became a full-time resident. She leaves a sister, Miriam Jacoby-Gallant of East Chatham, N.Y. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Belle Fried Gaffney, 93, died early Monday morning, Nov. 17, 2003 at Great Barrington Rehabilitation & Nursing Center. There will be no local services. Belle will be remembered with great love by her stepchildren, her many nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews.Her loving spirit and charm will live on in her beloved bird, "Gigi." She was the "star" at the Great Barrington Home and was loved by residents and staff for her wonderful sense of humor and quick mind.
