J. Raymond Scarmana

J. Raymond Scarmana, 84, formerly of Sheffield and Summerville of Torrington, Conn., died March 13 at the Litchfield Woods Health Care Center. Born in Torrington, Conn., on Sept. 7, 1916, son of John and Mary Tapparo Scarmana, he attended schools there. Mr. Scarmana was employed by the Torrington Co. for 40 years, retiring in 1980. He was a professional prizefighter, who fought under the name of "Billy Pettrole" in the New England Boxing Circuit, and a professional musician for 45 years, playing the electric guitar with the Teddy Williams Orchestra and Avalon Trio. He was a member of the Foremen's Club. His first wife, the former Doris Beauty, is deceased. He leaves his wife, the former Gertrude Seward; a son, John R. Scarmana Jr. of Meriden, Conn.; two daughters, Shirley Bartell and Jan Frost, both of Torrington; two stepdaughters, Marlene Atwood and Elizabeth Sermini, both of Great Barrington; three stepsons, Robert Seward and Stephen Seward, both of Lee, and Joseph Seward of Sheffield; a sister, Violet Huddy of Lansdale, Pa.; seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. The funeral will be held Friday morning at 10:30 from DRISCOLL MORTUARY, 138 Migeon Ave., Torrington. Burial will be in Hillside Cemetery. Friends may call at the mortuary Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to the Alzheimer's Support Group, Charlotte Hungerford Hospital, Torrington, CT 06790.
