Ethel R. Brown

Ethel R. Brown, 95, of East Main St. died yesterday at Fairview Hospital in Great Barrington. Born in West Springfield on April 19, 1905, daughter of Frank and Mabel Dale Ruesch, her family moved to Stockbridge when she was very young. She graduated from Pittsfield High School in 1923. She studied voice at the Jewel School of Music at the University of Hartford and later graduated from the former Berkshire Business College in Pittsfield, after attending the University of Massachusetts for a short time. Mrs. Brown was a member of the Wisdom Chapter, Order of Eastern Star in West Stockbridge. After her marriage in 1937, she and her husband, Wesley C. Brown, M.D., moved to Petersham, where he had his practice. While in Petersham, she was the town librarian and, for eight years, was the town treasurer. She also sang in the Unitarian Church in Petersham. The couple returned to Stockbridge in 1964. Her husband died in 1966. She leaves a son, Robert D. Brown of Stockbridge; a sister, Verna Gardner of Lenox; and a granddaughter. Funeral services will be Sunday, April 1, 2001 at 2 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME, Great Barrington, with the Rev. John Torrant, rector of St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Stockbridge, officiating. Burial will be in Blandford Hill Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 Saturday, March 31, at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Ethel R. Brown's memory to the Community Health Services of Richmond and West Stockbridge in care of the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 1230.
