Harriet M. Witow

Harriet M. Witow, 87, of 24 Silver St. died Friday at Fairview Commons. Born in Chicago on Dec. 8, 1916, daughter of Michael and Hattie Schwartzman Scherer, she was educated there. While in Chicago, she worked at Gets Moulding and Shriners' Hospital and was a volunteer for Meals on Wheels. She also cared for her parents for 14 years in her home. She moved to Great Barrington in 1994. Mrs. Witow was a communicant of Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield. She enjoyed her pets, especially her dogs. Her former husband, Edward L. Viani, whom she married in Parkridge, Ill., died Jan. 19, 1980. Her husband, Sam Witow, whom she married in 1949 in Chicago, died Sept. 14, 1993. She leaves a daughter, Margaret Vorck of Monterey; a sister, Loretta Lawson of San Jacinto, Calif.; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren. A son, Edward Viani Jr., died in 1945, and another daughter, Dorothy I. Conklin, died Dec. 11, 1966. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Harriet M. Witow, who died Friday, Dec. 26, 2003, will be celebrated Monday, Dec. 29, at 11 at Our Lady of the Valley Church, Sheffield, by the Rev. John S. Lis, pastor. Burial will be at a later date in Concordia Cemetery, Forest Park, Ill. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Harriet's memory may be made to the Southern Berkshire Volunteer Ambulance Squad, in care of BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, which is in charge of arrangements. Or, Masses and spiritual enrollments may be made in Harriet's memory at a church of one's choice. She leaves her brother-in-law, Edward Lawson. She was predeceased by three sisters.
