Eilene Ruth Oakley

Eilene Ruth Oakley, 74, formerly of 4 Maple Court, died Sunday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. She had resided at Mount Greylock Extended Care Facility in Pittsfield since March. Born in Pittsfield on Jan. 1, 1929, daughter of Magnus and Ruth Brown Unger, she was a graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mrs. Oakley was a secretary in the Pittsfield office of the former Morgan-Grampian Publishing Co., retiring in 1983. Before that, she had been a secretary at the Berkshire County Extension Service, the Welfare Department and the former Eaton Paper Co., all in Pittsfield. She enjoyed needlepoint, reading, gardening and animals, especially cats. She had held a pilot's license and had enjoyed flying open-cockpit planes in her younger years. She leaves a son, Lanesboro Fire Chief Peter M. Oakley, and a sister, Dorothy Ghinis of Tamarac, Fla. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Eilene R. Oakley, who died Dec. 28, 2003, will be held at the convenience of the family. There will be no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society or to Lanesboro Fire and Ambulance, both in care of DERY FUNERAL HOME, 54 Bradford St., Pittsfield, MA 01201. Eilene, who loved cats the most of all animals, always had a cat on her lap. She was predeceased by a sister, Ida Fosty of Lee.
