Warner Wright Wheeler

Warner Wright Wheeler, 87, of 98 East Main St. died Friday at Crescent Manor Nursing Home in Bennington, where he had been admitted Dec. 19. Born in Readsboro on July 29, 1916, son of Wilmer and Flora May Jarvais Wheeler, he attended schools there, including the former Readsboro High School. Mr. Wheeler was employed as a transfer-station operator for the town of Readsboro at the time of his death, and had worked for the town Cemetery Department and as a fireman at the former Readsboro Chair Factory. Before that, he was employed for 47 years by the former Deerfield Glassine Co. in Monroe Bridge. He was a member of Readsboro Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon and trustee, and an honorary member of the Readsboro Historical Society. He enjoyed fly-fishing and rabbit hunting. He and his wife, the former Wilma Ethel Bird , were married Dec. 19, 1945, in Brattleboro. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, William W. Wheeler of Readsboro, with whom he resided; two stepsons, Ronald E. Durfey of West Chesterfield, N.H., and Robert E. Durfey of Jacksonville; a sister, Violet Ingalls of Readsboro; five stepgrandchildren, and four step-great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Warner W. Wheeler, who died Dec. 26, 2003, will be private. Burial will be at the convenience of the family in Village Cemetery in Readsboro. Memorial contributions may be made to the Readsboro Historical Society or to Crescent Manor Nursing Home, both in care of FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA 01247, which is in charge of arrangements. Survivors include a son and daughter-in-law, William and Karen Wheeler; two stepsons and daughters-in-law, Ronald and Carol Durfey and Robert and Janice Durfey; five stepgrandchildren, Heather Underhill, Kate Pudvah, Lisa Underhill, Shannon Durfey and Robert Durfey. Four brothers and two sisters are deceased.
