Jason Kirshen

Jason Kirshen, 75, of 145 East New Lenox Road died yesterday at home. Born in Boston on Dec. 5, 1925, son of Simon and Frances Menkes Kirshen, he attended schools there and was a graduate of Boston Latin High School. He received a baccalaureate degree from the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and a civil engineering degree from Lowell State University. He also received a degree from Brown University. He was a World War II Army veteran. Mr. Kirshen was employed as a civil engineer for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts' Highway Department in Boston. He then was employed by Clarkson Construction. His first position was as a civil engineer supervisor of the new bridge being erected into Annapolis, Md. He later became the construction supervisor of road building in Burma and Nigeria for two separate contracting periods. He returned to the United States and Boston and was employed by the commonwealth as supervisor of road engineering. He retired and moved to Worthington in 1985. He moved to Pittsfield in 1999. He enjoyed reading and volunteering at the Survival Center in Northampton. He was also involved in community activities and civic affairs. He leaves his wife, the former Sylvia Novick, whom he married June 24, 1951; two daughters, Cindy Kirshen Fleming of West Kingston, R.I., and Marion Rice of Portland, Ore.; a sister, Leila Newhouse Salmon of Amsterdam, N.Y., and two granddaughters. He is also survived by his two granddaughters, Megan and Brenna. Graveside services will be held Friday at noon at Pittsfield Cemetery, with Rabbi David Small, spiritual leader of Knesset Israel Synagogue, officiating. There are no calling hours. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to the charity of one's choice in care of the DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME, which is in charge of the arrangements.
