Francis Edward Major

Francis Edward Major, 87, of Ashland Park, Apt. 513, 150 Ashland St. died Saturday at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he was admitted on Dec. 26. Born in Adams, on Feb. 1, 1916, son of Frank and Phoebe Brovian Major, he attended local schools. Mr. Major retired after 27 years as a stationary engineer in charge of the boilers for Crane & Co. in Dalton. A licensed plumber, he also was head of maintenance for the former St. Luke's Hospital in Pittsfield, and worked at the Greylock Division of the former Berkshire Mills and at the former Sprague Electric Co. He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church. His wife, the former Lillian Frances Dean Urbano, whom he married Feb. 3, 1945, died Aug. 16, 1992. He leaves two daughters, Sandra F. Preite of Adams and Shirley LaRoche of Hancock; a stepson, Paul Urbano of St. Paul, Minn., nine grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Francis E. Major, who died Jan. 17, 2004, will be Saturday, Jan. 24, at 8:15 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Francis' Church. Burial will follow in Bellevue Cemetery, Adams. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday, Jan. 23, from 5 to 7. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for St. Jude's Children's Hospital through the funeral home. Survivors include nine grandchildren, Kimberly Ostrobinsky, Lisa Gaetani, Cathy Fox, Douglas Urbano, Paul Urbano III; Barbara Belair, Debra Urbano, Edward Lavigne, Karen Britten; four great-grandchildren, Amy Lynn Gaetani, Megan Ostrobinsky, Nicholas Ostrobinsky and Jacob Ostrobinsky. He also leaves many loved ones in Dalton.
