Francis Callahan

Francis N. Callahan, 75, of 15 Narragansett Ave. died yesterday at home. Born in Pittsfield on Oct. 13, 1925, son of John J. and Mary Nally Callahan, he was a 1943 graduate of the former Dalton High School. He received his baccalaureate degree from Fordham University in the Bronx in 1950. He was employed by General Electric Co. as a cost estimator and contract negotiator for 35 years, retiring in 1985. Prior to working for GE, he was employed at Crane & Co. after high school, and later served as a state inspector for a short period. Mr. Callahan was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church. He was active in city Democratic politics and was a former member of the Democratic City committee. He also served on the Pittsfield Licensing Board. An avid walker, he enjoyed living on Pontoosuc Lake and giving pontoon boat tours of the lake. His wife, the former Teresa R. Wechter, whom he married Jan. 14, 1956, died April 14, 1999. He leaves three sons, Michael F. Callahan of Pittsfield, Timothy F. Callahan of Wales, Wis., and James F. Clark of Brentwood, Tenn.; two sisters, Sister Marita E. Callahan of the Sisters of Providence in Holyoke and Margaret A. Ducharme of West Springfield; a brother, John N. Callahan of Stamford, Conn.; five grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren. He was the "Proud Papa" of Kathleen A. Redman, Janet M. Dever, Marita J. Callahan, Sean M. Callahan and Brian K. Callahan, and his two great-grandchildren, Patrick Redman and Kaitlyn Dever. Calling hours at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME will be Thursday from 3 to 7. Funeral services will be Friday at 8:15 from the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Joseph's Church with the Rev. Michael Shershanovich, pastor, officiating. Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to St. Joseph's Church or to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
