Edward L. Mann

Edward L. Mann, 79, of Castle Hill Avenue died Sunday at Fairview Hospital. Born in Vineland, N.J., on July 2, 1924, son of Edward L. and Maude Devonshire Mann, he graduated from Ocean City (N.J.) High School. He later earned his bachelor of science in education from Trenton (N.J.) State College and two master's degrees in business from Temple University in Philadelphia and Rutgers University in New Brunswick, N.J. He moved to the Berkshires in 1967. An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served from spring 1943 until being honorably discharged on Oct. 23, 1946. Mr. Mann taught architectural drawing and mathematics from Grades 7 to 12 at Lenox Memorial High School until his retirement in 1986. He and his wife, the former Matilda "Tillie" Schwertly, owned and operated Camp Half Moon in Monterey. He was a member of First Congregational Church and the National Education, the Massachusetts Teachers and the Western Massachusetts Camp associations. He enjoyed architecture and woodworking. He also had been a member of the Ocean City Beach Patrol for three years. He and his wife were married Aug. 26, 1950, in Glassboro, N.J. Besides his wife, he leaves three sons, Edward L. Mann of Pittsfield, Paul S. Mann of Broomfield, Colo., and Robert J. Mann of Fort Myers, Fla.; two daughters, Gretchen E. Mann and Rebecca J. Mann, both of Great Barrington; a sister, Joan Stengers of Somers, Conn., and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Edward L. Mann, who died Feb. 1, 2004, will be conducted Thursday, Feb. 5, at 4 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor of First Congregational Church. Burial will be Friday, Feb. 6, at 3 in Friendship Cemetery, Monroeville, N.J. There will be no calling hours. Above all, he cherished the time he spent with his family. Mr. Mann also is survived by six grandchildren, Alexander, Katie, Abbey, Anais, Lucas and Allyson. Donations may be made to the Edward L. Mann Memorial Scholarship Fund through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. The scholarship will be offered to assist children so they can attend summer camp.
