Arthur H. Gregory

Arthur H. Gregory, 84, of Cameron House, Housatonic Street, died Feb. 11 at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Maplewood, N.J., on May 21, 1919, son of Alfred and Helen Ingersoll Gregory, he attended school there. He graduated in 1940 from Amherst College. Mr. Gregory served in the Navy as a carrier pilot on the USS Yorktown during World War II. After his discharge, he moved to Boston and graduated from Northeastern University Law School in 1950. He moved to Pittsfield in 1951 and established an individual law practice. He practiced law for 52 years in several towns, including Pittsfield, Housatonic, Great Barrington and Lenox. He was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court. A communicant of St. James' Episcopal Church in Great Barrington, he was active in the church's choir. He helped establish a youth program in Great Barrington, which ran an activity center for teens. He was a member of the Music Lovers Club and active in drama for many years in Berkshire County. He starred as Walter Mitty in "The Secret Life of Walter Mitty." He married the former Maria Vezin in 1947. They later divorced. He leaves two daughters, Lisa Schmierer of Northport, N.Y., and Carol Raines of Clovis, Calif.; a son, Dan Gregory of Fort Collins, Colo., and six grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Attorney Arthur H. Gregory, who died Feb. 11, 2004, will be Saturday, March 6, 2004, at 4 p.m. at St. James' Episcopal Church, Great Barrington, MA, with the Rev. Catherine Wood Richardson officiating. There are no calling hours. Expressions of sympathy in Attorney Gregory's memory may be made to either St. James' Church or to the Judge Wright Legal Education Scholarship Fund, c/o BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230, who is in charge of arrangements.
