Donald Carmel Sr.

Donald Lewis Carmel Sr., 79, of 8 Old Mill Drive, Poughkeepsie, N.Y., died yesterday at Vassar Brothers Hospital in Poughkeepsie. Born in Dalton on May 28, 1921, son of William and Catherine Glendon Carmel, he attended local schools and graduated from Colgate University. An Army veteran of World War II, he was a combat infantryman attached to an artillery unit in North Africa. After being transferred to the front lines as a sniper, he served in southern Italy, Anzio, in the invasion of southern France and during the final thrust into Germany. After his military service, Mr. Carmel moved to Poughkeepsie and joined IBM, from which he retired as a manager in 1988. He enjoyed traveling. He and his wife, the former Olga M. Wowk, were married Nov. 10, 1951. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, Donald L. Carmel Jr. of New Canaan, Conn., and Bruce Carmel of the state of New York; a daughter, Denise Martin of the state of New York, and seven grandchildren. There will be no calling hours. Everyone is invited to a Mass this morning at 10 at St. Martin De Porres Church, Cedar Valley Road, Poughkeepsie. Burial will be in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Mr. Carmel's greatest love was spending time with his grandchildren, often canceling a golf date to baby-sit. He could often be found on a softball, baseball or soccer field watching his children and grandchildren play sports. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in his memory to the Alzheimer's Association, Mid-Hudson chapter, 2 Jefferson Plaza, Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
