Dorothy Mae Spencer

Dorothy Mae Spencer, 83, of Village East, 564 Union St., died yesterday at Sweet Brook Care Centers, where she was admitted Feb. 10. Born in North Adams on Aug. 3, 1920, daughter of James C. and Edith Ann Wilson Malcolm, she graduated from Drury High School in 1940 and completed the hair-styling program at the former Lottie Harriman School of Hair Styling. Mrs. Spencer was employed for 13 years at the cosmetics counter at the former Apothecary Hall, retiring in 1980. Before that, she had been a telephone operator and later a supervisor for the former New England Telephone Co. for 17 years. She was first employed in the gas mask division of the former Wall-Streeter Shoe Co. during World War II, then as a hair stylist with the late Harry Bontempi Hair Stylist, the former Rudy's Hair Styling Salon and Emily's Beauty Salon. She was a 71-year member of First Baptist Church, where she sang in the choir and taught Sunday school. She also served on the church's education and social committees, and was a member of the Women's Fellowship and Over 50 Club. She also was a member of the Telephone Pioneers. Her husband, William Jepson Spencer, whom she married Nov. 1, 1941, in the First Baptist Church, died Oct. 18, 1979. She leaves her niece and caregiver, Edith DaSacco of North Adams. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dorothy M. Spencer, who died Feb. 22, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Feb. 25, at 11 at First Baptist Church of North Adams by the Rev. Joseph DeCosta, pastor. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery. Calling hours at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., will be tomorrow, Feb. 24, from 4 to 7. Flowers may be sent or donations in her memory are suggested for First Baptist Church through the funeral home. Survivors include nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews. She was predeceased by two sisters, Christina Carleton in 1926 and Evelyn Crockwell in 1996.
