Francis A. Spila

Francis A. Spila, 89, of the Village at Laurel Lake in Lee died Saturday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Adams on Oct. 2, 1911, son of Albert and Charlotte Wlodyka Szpila, he attended local schools. He was a resident of Brookline for more than 30 years. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served as a radar technician on the USS Capella. Mr. Spila was employed as a retail consultant to celebrities and sports figures in Boston and New York City, retiring in the early 1980s. He leaves several nieces and nephews. The funeral for will be Wednesday at 8 a.m. at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, Mass., followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 9 at St. Thomas' Church in Adams celebrated by the Rev. Daniel Boyle, pastor of the Parish of Notre Dame-St. Thomas'. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, Mass. There will be no calling hours. Memorial donations are suggested for a charity of the donor's choice through the funeral home. He was predeceased by a brother, Thaddeus Szpila, and two sisters, Helen Slattery and Mary Philie.
