Philip Lee O'Connell

Philip Lee O'Connell, 83, of Bethesda, Md., formerly of Sheffield, died Wednesday of a heart attack at Potomac Valley Nursing Home in Rockville, Md. Born in Sheffield on Aug. 11, 1920, son of William D. and Gertrude Sides O'Connell, he was a 1938 graduate of the former Sheffield High School. He moved to the Washington, D.C., area in 1939 and attended Georgetown University from 1939 to 1941 and from 1946 to 1950, graduating from its School of Foreign Service. He also graduated from Georgetown Law School in 1953 and, in 1963, was accepted into and completed the Harvard Business School Advanced Executive Program. A Navy veteran of World War II, he served from 1942 to 1946 in the European and Pacific theaters. An executive with the Navy Department from 1950 to 1967, he retired as assistant comptroller of the Navy. Following his government service, he joined Peat, Marwick, Mitchell, now KPMG, as a partner in its government consulting practice. He finished his career as a consultant for Federal Corporate Management from 1974 to 1988. Mr. O'Connell was a member of St. Bartholomew's Church in Bethesda, where he also did volunteer work. He leaves a son, Daniel O'Connell of Silver Spring, Md., and a granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Philip Lee O'Connell, 83, died of cardiac arrest on Feb. 25, 2004, at Potomac Valley Nursing Center in Rockville. A Liturgy of Christian Burial will be celebrated Tuesday, March 2, at 11 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield by the Rev. John Lis, pastor. Burial will follow in Sheffield Center Cemetery. There will be no calling hours. He also leaves a granddaughter, Kimberly O'Connell of Silver Spring, Md., and two brothers, Gerald O'Connell and John O'Connell, along with many devoted friends.
