Lloyd "Bud" Hughes Jr

Lloyd "Bud" Hughes Jr., 77, of 10 Leslie Ave. died yesterday at Berkshire Medical Center. Born in Gastonia, N.C., on April 13, 1926, son of Luther and Katie Kaley Hughes, he was educated there. He enlisted in the Army at age 16. He later transferred to the Navy, retiring after 20 years as a boatswain's mate first class and salvage diver. After his retirement, he worked as a commercial roofer with Wooliver Roofing and as a custodian at Lanesboro Elementary School. He also was in the food concession business, working many local events and fairs. He was a member of the Navy's Fleet Reserve Association. His first wife, the former Antoinette Marino, died in 1967. He leaves his wife, the former Janice Bottomly. Besides his wife, he leaves three daughters, Jean Hughes, with whom he resided, Sandra White of Berkshire and Cheryl Dietrich of Copper Harbor, Mich.; a son, Robin Hughes of Pittsfield; two stepsons, David Piche of Pennsylvania and Delmont Keyes Jr. of Lanesboro; a stepdaughter, Carol Walters of Braintree; a brother, Bill Hughes of Arkansas; two sisters, Jessie Martin and Naomi Boatwright, both of Rock Hill, S.C., and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Lloyd "Bud" Hughes Jr. died in Pittsfield on Monday, March 1, 2004. Beloved grandfather to Lane Wyatt Hughes. Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, March 3, at 2 at DWYER FUNERAL HOME, 776 North St., Pittsfield, by the Rev. Peter A. Gregory, pastor of St. Charles' Church. Burial will follow in Pittsfield Cemetery. Calling hours will be Wednesday from noon to 2, prior to the funeral. He was predeceased by a brother, Jim Hughes, and a sister, Dorothy Conner, both of Rock Hill, S.C. He also leaves his beloved cat, Nermal, who was his longtime companion. If friends desire, donations may be made to the Lanesboro Volunteer Fire Department.
