Evelyn "Evvy" Woolis

Evelyn "Evvy" Woolis, 86, of 214 Pleasant St., Housatonic, died Sunday at Fairview Hospital. Born in New York City on Feb. 4, 1918, daughter of Isaac and Katie Bloom Galkin, she was educated there and graduated from Morris High School. She had resided in Suffern, N.Y., and later West Palm Beach, Fla., until moving to Housatonic in 2002. She spent a year with the Army during World War II. Mrs. Woolis was employed as a clerical worker for 15 years by the East Ramapo Central School District in New York state, retiring in 1980. She traveled extensively, and was a political activist and an avid reader. She enjoyed shopping, giving gifts, entertaining and anything chocolate. Her husband, Bernard J. Woolis, whom she married May 25, 1940, died in 1995. She leaves four daughters, Barbara Warren, with whom she resided, Karen Woolis of Housatonic, Laura Woolis of Suffern and Diana Woolis of New York City, four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Evelyn Galkin Woolis, who died March 7, 2004, surrounded by her family, will be today, March 9, at 12:30 at SANCTUARY OF ABRAHAM AND SARAH in Paramus, N.J. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Fairview Hospital. A memorial service will be held sometime in the spring in Berkshire County. Mrs. Woolis also leaves many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by three sisters, Ann, Celia and Naomi, and two brothers, Dave and Lee. She was a student of life, an enthusiastic shopper, gift-giver and friend to all she met. She loved to entertain with her witty sense of humor, and was a big fan of hot fudge sundaes.
