Sally S. Bergmans

Sally S. Bergmans, 76, of East Main Street died Sunday at home. Born in Larchmont, N.Y., on Nov. 5, 1927, daughter of Kenneth H. and Adelaide Wright Stevens, she attended schools in Pelham Manor, N.Y., and graduated from Wheaton College in Norton in 1949 and later from Katherine Gibbs Secretarial School. She had been a resident of Stockbridge for more than 40 years. Mrs. Bergmans was an administrative assistant for 27 years at Berkshire Country Day School, working for four headmasters. She also had worked for the U.S. Foreign Service and was stationed for several years at The Hague, and as a stringer for The Berkshire Eagle in the 1960s She was the secretary for the Red Lion Inn/Norman Rockwell Museum Golf Tournament for more than 30 years, working with former Sen. John H. Fitzpatrick. She was an early board member of the Old Corner House, and its successor the Norman Rockwell Museum, as well as the Stockbridge Library. Recently, she was secretary of the Town Finance Committee and a volunteer with the Southern Berkshire Literacy Network. Mrs. Bergmans provided editorial assistance to author Stefan Lorant with his book, "The Glorious Burden." She and her former husband, Henricus G.A. Bergmans, met in Holland and were married in Pelham Manor. She enjoyed reading, crossword puzzles, cross-stitching, music and "Jeopardy!" She lived with her sister, in Stockbridge. She leaves her sister, Suzy Sheridan, with whom she had resided for 20 years; a daughter, Johanna B. Musselman of Shrewsbury; a son, Henricus G.A. "Hank" Bergmans Jr. of Columbia, S.C., and a granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Sally Stevens Bergmans, who died March 14, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow, March 17, at 1 at First Congregational Church of Stockbridge, with Stephen Bridges, pastor. Survivors include her granddaughter, Sarah Musselman; her son-in-law, David Musselman of Shrewsbury; two nieces, Sally Sheridan of Oklahoma City and Barrett Sheridan; a nephew, Richard C. Sheridan of Catonsville, Md., and many devoted friends.
