Anna Mordia Benco

Anna Mordia Benco, 92, formerly of 50 Hollenbeck Ave., died Sunday at Fairview Hospital. She had resided at Laurel Lake in Lee since August 2000. Born in New York City on June 14, 1911, daughter of John and Anna Krizan Janovicek, she moved to Czechoslovakia as an infant with her family, returning to the United States as a teenager and settling in New York City. She moved to Great Barrington in 1972. Mrs. Benco had been employed as a nanny, housekeeper and cook for several prominent families in New York. She was a member of Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsfield. While in New York City, she was very active in the Slovak Evangelical Lutheran Church. She was a volunteer at the Visiting Nurse Association's thrift shop until it closed. She enjoyed cooking and baking. Her first husband, John Mordia, died in 1954. Her husband Julius Benco died in September 1992. She leaves a daughter, Susan Mordia Kormanik of New Marlboro; a son, Edward J. Mordia of the Bronx, N.Y., and a stepdaughter, Mary Benco of Danvers. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial service for Anna Mordia Benco, who died Sunday, March 21, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow, March 24, at 3 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Harold Hoeppner. There will be no calling hours. Burial will be Thursday, March 25, at 11:30 in St. Michael's Cemetery in New York City. Expressions of sympathy in Anna's memory may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society, HospiceCare in the Berkshires or to Faith Evangelical Lutheran Church in Pittsfield in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. She was a firm believer in faith and volunteerism. Her family, friends and neighbors benefited from her well-known culinary skills.
