Harold M. "Barney" Johnson

Harold M. "Barney" Johnson, 83, of 5 Gilmore Ave. died yesterday at Baystate Medical Center in Springfield. Born in Lee on June 25, 1920, son of Floyd and Pearl R. Loomis Johnson, he moved to Great Barrington at a young age and attended the former Searles High School. An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served as a technical sergeant. Mr. Johnson was employed as a custodian at Monument Mountain Regional High School and the Great Barrington courthouse from 1976 until retiring in 1985. Before that, he had worked as a truck driver for the former Palmer Lines and Jones Motors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and bird watching. He and his wife, the former Alice N. Nowicki, were married June 23, 1945, in St. Mary's Rectory in Lakeville, Conn. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, James H. Johnson of Pittsfield and Jeffrey P. Johnson of Great Barrington; three daughters, Barbara Coyle of Appomattox, Va., Judith Alfasa of Boca Raton, Fla., and Deborah McManus of Paxton; two sisters, Nellie Mead of Great Barrington and Eva Hart of Mesa, Ariz., and four grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Harold "Barney" M. Johnson, who died Monday, March 29, 2004, will be conducted tomorrow, March 31, at 11 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME by Pastor Jack McManus. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. The family will receive friends for one hour prior to the service, from 10 to 11. Expressions of sympathy in Barney's memory may be made to Southern Berkshire Elderly Transportation Corp. in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. He enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren, Jillian and James Johnson, and Michaela and Ryan McManus, and his dog, Moose.
