Norman Andrew Lappies

Norman Andrew Lappies, 83, of 250 Pittsfield Road died yesterday at North Adams Commons. Born in Chatham, N.Y., on April 28, 1920, son of Raymond and Mabel Rathbun Lappies, he attended schools in Cheshire. A longtime resident of Cheshire, he moved to Hinsdale in 1977. He was last employed by Miss Hall's School in Pittsfield as a custodian and repairman for 20 years, retiring in 1999. He had also been the owner and operator of the Cheshire Auto Co. for more than 20 years. He later operated a gas station and used car lot in Hinsdale until the early 1980s. He was a lifetime member of the Cheshire Rod & Gun Club, and enjoyed fishing and hunting. His wife, the former Madeline DeLoye, whom he married Sept. 27, 1944, died Nov. 28, 1998. He leaves a son, Norman R. Lappies of Cheshire; a daughter, Sandra M. Ray of Connecticut; a sister, Virginia Field of Cheshire, six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Norman A. Lappies, 83, who died April 1, 2004, will be Saturday at 7 p.m. at the DERY-CHESHIRE FUNERAL HOME, 121 North State Road, Cheshire, with the Rev. William D. Furey, pastor of the Berkshire Union Chapel, officiating. Burial will take place at a later date in the spring at Cheshire Cemetery. Calling hours will be Saturday from 5 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Cheshire Rod & Gun Club in care of the funeral home.
