W.J. Clarke Agnew Sr

W.J. Clarke Agnew Sr., 86, of 75 Berkshire Drive died April 5 at North Adams Regional Hospital. Born in North Adams on Sept. 19, 1917, son of Dr. John Robert Agnew and Julia Agnes Lyons Agnew, he moved with his family to Springfield as a child and graduated from Cathedral High School there. Mr. Agnew also attended the University of Vermont in Burlington, and graduated from the Feagin School of the Arts in New York City. Mr. Agnew was an insurance broker for 26 years at the Gallup-Dickey Insurance Agency in North Adams, retiring in 1984. He was a communicant of St. Patrick's Church, a former member and past president of the North Adams Kiwanis Club and a former lieutenant governor of the Western Massachusetts Kiwanis division. He was a founding member and past president of the Williams College Quarterback Sideline Club, a longtime member of the Taconic Golf Club and a volunteer with his wife, the former Therese Welch, at the Williamstown Chamber of Commerce information booth. He and his wife were married May 4, 1937, in New York City. Besides his wife, he leaves a daughter, Joanne Notsley of Williamstown; five sons, William J.C. Agnew Jr. of Wilbraham, James R. Agnew of Ashburn, Va., Robert T. Agnew of Vienna, Va., J. Thomas Agnew of Williamstown and Richard E. Agnew of Longmeadow; a sister, Vera Blake-Lobb of Jericho, N.Y., 21 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Funeral services for Clarke Agnew will be Saturday at 9 at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, West Chapels, 521 West Main St., North Adams, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial celebrated at 10 at St. Patrick's Church by the Rev. Mark Burke, SJ, pastor of Sts. Patrick's & Raphael's Parish. Burial will follow in the family plot in Eastlawn Cemetery. Calling hours at the funeral home will be Friday from 5 to 8. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations are suggested for the Williamstown Food Pantry through the funeral home. Survivors include a son-in-law, John Notsley; five daughters-in-law, Carol Agnew, Susan M. Agnew, Candice R. Agnew, Judith Agnew and Mary Patricia Agnew. He was predeceased by a sister, Ann Froiland.
