Eugene Russell "Gene" Hendrix

Eugene Russell "Gene" Hendrix, 76, of Hill Road, Interlaken, died Wednesday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. He moved to Berkshire County in 1966 and had been an Interlaken resident since 1983. Born in Kansas City, Mo., on April 12, 1928, son of Nathan Scarritt and Marguerite Kreeger Hendrix, he attended local schools and earned a degree in electrical engineering at Tufts University in Medford. He worked for GE as an engineer in the ordnance department for 25 years, retiring in 1993. Prior to working in the Pittsfield plant, he worked for GE in Schenectady and Syracuse, N.Y. He was involved with the groups working to clean the Housatonic River, and participated in the Stockbridge Land Trust. In addition, he used his engineering talents as a volunteer tutor at Berkshire Community College. His real vocations centered on the environment and his home, designed with his wife and built with friends and his son Erik. He was a member of the Stockbridge Golf Club, where he was an avid tennis player, and he enjoyed singing in local choral groups. He was also a talented cook and an accomplished horologist, as the many chimes throughout the house attested. He leaves his wife, the former Susan Henderson, whom he married on May 22, 1976; two sons, Erik Hendrix of Basalt, Colo., and Nathan Hendrix of Pine Cliff, Colo.; two daughters, Pamela Post of Pomfret, Vt., and Elizabeth Hendrix of Boston; two sisters, Peggy Branch of Memphis, Tenn., and Patricia Metropolis of Santa Fe, N.M., and two grandchildren. He was predeceased by a son, Richard Post, who died in 1987. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Eugene R. "Gene" Hendrix is also survived by his grandchildren, Hilary and Emma White, and his many devoted friends, nieces and nephews. His life was centered on his family. Friends may call at his home, 8 Hill Road, Interlaken, on Sunday, April 18, from 2 to 4. In lieu of flowers, please send donations to the Stockbridge Land Trust, P.O. Box 1063, Stockbridge, MA 01262. THE ROCHE FUNERAL HOME in Lenox is in charge of arrangements. His "Genebread" was a staple at home and at neighborhood dinner parties. He will be missed by all who knew him.
