Alfred M. "Popsie" Goerlach Sr

Alfred M. "Popsie" Goerlach Sr., 73, of 631 Old Windsor Road died Saturday at home. He had served on the town's Finance Committee and Sewer Commission, and as its representative on the Central Berkshire Regional School Committee Born in Pittsfield on April 8, 1931, son of Gustave A. and Helen Boynton Goerlach, he was a 1951 graduate of Pittsfield High School, where he was a three-sport athlete and named all-Berkshire pitcher in 1950. He had played minor league baseball for the Chicago White Sox, as well as with area leagues and semipro teams. He moved to Hinsdale in the early 1960s. He served in the Marine Corps from 1952 to 1954, and was stationed in Florida. Mr. Goerlach was employed by the Pittsfield Water Department for 37 years, retiring in 1987 as a foreman. He was a member of the Berkshire County Sheriff's Department, the Dalton Lions Club, the Pittsfield Elk's Club and the Dalton American Legion. An avid golfer, he also enjoyed hunting and fishing. His wife, the former Nancy Lee Roth, whom he married March 17, 1952, died Feb. 5. 2003. He leaves two daughters, Heidi Cornwell of Hinsdale and Rothann Goerlach of Westford, Vt.; two sons, Alfred M. Goerlach Jr. of Dalton and Michael Goerlach of Hinsdale, nine grandchildren and three great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A private graveside service for Alfred M. "Popsie" Goerlach, who died April 17, 2004, will be conducted Thursday morning. There will be no calling hours. The family invites Popsie's friends to gather with them at the Dalton American Legion at noon Thursday for a time of remembrance.
