Edward John McKenna

Edward John McKenna, 57, of Brewster died Tuesday of heart failure in Hyannis. He had lived in Pittsfield from 1946 to 1977, in Sheffield from 1980 to 2000, and in Brewster since then. Born in Pittsfield on Sept. 29, 1946, son of Helen McKenna of Pittsfield and the late Edward John McKenna, he was a graduate of Cranewell Prep School. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in English from Fairfield (Conn.) University in 1968. He also earned a master's degree in education from the former North Adams State College in 1974, and a master's degree in English literature in 1975 from Leeds University. He served in the Air Force. He was an English teacher at Berkshire School from 1980 to 2000. He was a member of the U.S. Professional Tennis Association and a tennis professional for more than 20 years. Mr. McKenna was a tennis coach as well, and a published poet and author. His wife of 32 years, the former Gail R. Brogan, is deceased. Besides his mother, he leaves two sons, Edward John McKenna III of Cambridge and Conor James McKenna of Monterey, Calif.; a daughter, Keira McKenna Holbrough of Atkinson, N.H., and one granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Edward John McKenna Jr. will be Saturday, April 24, at 11 at Our Lady of the Valley Church in Sheffield.
