Frederick Besancon Jr.

Frederick J. Besancon Jr., 50, of Ruidoso, N.M., a former resident of Otis, died Monday at home. Born in Great Barrington on March 1, 1951, son of Frederick Besancon Sr. and E. Marie Tracy Besancon, he attended Otis Elementary School and was a 1968 graduate of Lee High School. During his school years, he was involved with the Racing Circuit sponsored by the Otis Ridge Ski Area. He also taught at the Otis Ridge ski camp. He attended Lowell Technology College and graduated from Berkshire Community College and Westfield State College, earning a bachelor's degree in math and science in 1973. He moved in 1973 to Ruidoso, where he worked at Ski Apache Ski Area, teaching handicapped children. He was also employed as a chef at various restaurants in the area, including the Jockey Club at the Ruidoso Downs racetrack and at the Billy the Kid Casino and Restaurant, where he was still employed at the time of his death. While in New Mexico, he volunteered as a coach for a youth soccer team. He enjoyed skiing, fishing and hunting. Besides his parents of Otis, he leaves his wife, the former Patience Petro of Ruidoso; a son, Justin J. Besancon of Ruidoso, and a sister, Anne-Marie Besancon of Otis. A memorial service will be held Saturday, April 21, at 2 at Otis Congregational Church with the Rev. Lin Mathews Berlin, pastor, officiating. Friends wishing may make donations to the Justin Besancon Scholarship Fund in care of the KELLY FUNERAL HOME, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238.
