HERBERT M. COOKIS

Herbert M. Cookis, 62, of 903 South President St., Wheaton, Illinois, died Tuesday, December 12, 2000 at the Central Dupage Hospital in Winfield, Illinois. He was born in North Adams, MA on October 23, 1938. A son of the late Samuel Cookis and Ruth (Weiner) Cookis. He attended schools in North Adams, MA, and graduated from Drury High School with the class of 1957. He then attended Ripon College in Ripon, Wisconsin and graduated with the class of 1961 with a B.A. degree in English Literature. Mr. Cookis was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa at Ripon College. He then received a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship to the University of Chicago in 1961 where he majored in English Literature from 1961 to 1964. He then was employed from 1964 to 1970 in the Liquated Carbonic Division of General Dynamics & Motorola where he wrote technical copy for the companies. In 1970, Mr. Cookis became the owner and operator of his own business "Out of Print-Scholarly Books" located in Wheaton & Elmhust, Illinois. He loved the written word and books were his life. All his friends & relatives were enriched by his knowledge and wit. Survivors include his wife of 39 years, Patricia A. (Gagliardi) Cookis, whom he married August 11, 1961 in St. Anthony of Padua Church, North Adams, MA. One daughter, Judith Marilyn Cookis of Wheaton, Illinois, one sister, Riva Freelander of Chapel Hill, N.C., two brothers, Julius "Joe" Cookis & Macy Cookis both of North Adams, MA. Funeral services for Herbert M. Cookis will take place Friday morning at 11:00 A.M. at the Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, CENTRAL CHAPELS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA with the Rabbi Jeffrey Wolfson Goldwasser of Congregation Beth Israel in North Adams, MA officiating. Burial will follow in the family plot in Southview Cemetery, North Adams, MA. Ther are NO CALLING HOURS. The Flynn & Dagnoli-Montagna Home for Funerals, CENTRAL CHAPERLS, 74 Marshall St., North Adams, MA are in charge of arrangements.
