William J. Newell

William J. Newell Sr., 75, formerly of 40 Willard Place, died yesterday at Hillcrest Commons. Born in Pittsfield on Aug. 19, 1925, son of George and Marie Vanderlee Newell, he was educated in Dalton schools and graduated from the former Dalton High School in 1943. He moved to Pittsfield in 1950. An Army veteran of World War II, he was affiliated with the 78th Division Infantry. He was employed as a machine operator for GE Plastics, retiring in 1985 after 39 years of service. While at GE, he was the divisional steward of the union. Mr. Newell was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church. He was a member of the Giant Pumpkin Growers and enjoyed many hours in his garden. He was also a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Pittsfield American Legion. His wife, the former Elizabeth Enos, whom he married June 21, 1947, died Oct. 13, 1982. He leaves a daughter, Ann-Marie Watson of Gorham, Maine; a son, William J. Newell Jr. of Pittsfield; and four grandsons. A daughter, Marie E. Newell, died May 23, 1953. Calling hours will be Thursday from 4 to 7 at DEVANNY-CONDRON FUNERAL HOME. Funeral services will be Friday at 9:15 at the funeral home, followed by a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at Sacred Heart Church. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery in Dalton. In lieu of flowers, if friends desire, memorial donations may be made to HospiceCare in the Berkshires in care of the funeral home.
