William Bannon

William Bannon, 84, of Prospect St. died yesterday at Laurel Lake Center in Lee, where he had resided for the past three days. He was the owner and operator of Bill's Pharmacy. Born in Cohoes, N.Y., on Oct. 24, 1919, son of Hyman and Fanny Davidoff Bannon, he was a 1956 graduate of the Hampden College of Pharmacy in Willimanset. An Army veteran of World War II, he was stationed in England, where he earned a Purple Heart. He served from 1942 to 1945. He purchased the former Smith's Pharmacy in 1968 and established Bill's Pharmacy. His son, Stephen, joined the business in 1981. His wife, the former Frances Katsh, whom he married Oct. 20, 1946, died Aug. 8, 1991. Besides his son, Stephen, he leaves another son, Carl Bannon of Claremont, N.H.; a daughter, Sandy Hirbour of Great Barrington, and seven grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- William Bannon of Great Barrington died Saturday, June 12, 2004, at Laurel Lake Center in Lee, where he had been for the last three days. He is survived by his children, Carl Bannon and his wife, Frances, of Claremont, N.H.; Stephen Bannon and his wife, Teresa, of Great Barrington; Sandy Hirbour and her husband, Peter, of Great Barrington; his sister-in-law, Elaine Mintz, and brother-in-law, Fred Mintz, of Sarasota, Fla.; sister-in-law, Grace Katsh of Seattle; seven grandchildren, Julie and Eric Hirbour, Sara, Joshua, Jessica, Carla and Kathleen Bannon, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be Tuesday, June 15, at 2 at the FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington with Sheldon Rothberg officiating. Burial will follow at Ahavath Sholom Cemetery in Great Barrington. The family will receive friends on Tuesday from 12:30 until the time of the service at the funeral home. The family will sit Shiva on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday evenings from 6 to 8 at the family home, 37 Prospect St., Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Fairview Hospital through the funeral home, 426 Main St., Great Barrington, 01230. Bill dedicated his life to his business, which has always been known for giving friendly, caring patient consultations. Because of his dedication to the community, the business grew steadily.
