Anne Bowen Inglis

Anne Bowen Inglis, 88, died Tuesday morning at Fairview Commons, where she had resided since September 2002. Born in Baltimore on Dec. 28, 1915, daughter of John B. and Virginia Bean Edwards, she graduated from schools there. She attended Bryn Mawr College in Pennsylvania and earned her bachelor's degree from Flora Stone Mather College in Cleveland. In 1967, at the age of 52, she earned a doctor of philosophy degree in Romance languages from Case Western Reserve in Cleveland. She resided in Cleveland for many years until moving to Amherst in 1979, and to Fox Hill Retirement Community in Westwood in 1991. A teacher, Mrs. Inglis taught French at both the grade school and high school levels at the Laurel School for Girls, Cleveland Heights Public School and in the Shaker Heights Public School System, where she introduced a soccer program. She also taught adult education. A social activist, she was active in the NAACP, women's education, the African-American Community Theater and French- and Italian-language organizations in Cleveland. While in Great Barrington, she was an active member at Berkshire South Regional Community Center until early December. While in Amherst, she founded a senior hiking group and scouted miles of trails. She also was a volunteer for the public library and delivered large-print books to the elderly. In Westwood, she directed and was a member of the Fox Hill Players. Her husband, Richard Inglis Jr., whom she married March 27, 1937, in Baltimore, died Jan. 14, 2003. She leaves four sons, Richard Inglis III of Walla Walla, Wash., James Inglis of Bridport, Vt., Andrew Inglis of Concord and Dr. Alan Inglis of Great Barrington; two daughters, Elizabeth Inglis of Hoboken, N.J., and Virginia Inglis of Newton; a brother, William Bennett Edwards of Waynesboro, Va., 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- A memorial gathering for Anne Bowen Edwards Inglis, who died June 15, 2004, will be held at a later date. She is survived by her children, Richard Inglis III and his wife, Marion, of Walla Walla, Wash., Virginia Inglis of Newton, James Inglis and his wife, Carolyn, of Bridport, Vt., Andrew Inglis and his wife, Peggy, of Concord and Dr. Alan Inglis and his wife, Elizabeth, of Great Barrington; Elizabeth Inglis of Hoboken, N.J.; a brother, William Bennett Edwards of Waynesboro, Va., 11 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by two brothers, David and John Edwards.
