John W. Bergen

John William Bergen, 91, of 2425 Ashdale Drive, Austin, Texas, a former resident of Pittsfield, died Wednesday at Christopher House Hospice in Austin. Born in Patterson, N.J., on March 29, 1910, son of William and Florence Dixon Bergen, he attended Columbia College and graduated from Fordham Law School. An Army veteran of World War II, he served in the 183rd Field Artillery Battalion, Third Army, as a liaison pilot. He was decorated with the Flying Cross and the Three Oak Leaf Cluster, among others. After the war, he continued his overseas service with the Army in the Judge Advocate Division for 20 years. He retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel. After his retirement, he and his wife settled in Pittsfield for many years, until their move to Austin nine years ago. He pursued life-long interests in the stock market and tennis. He leaves his wife of 60 years, the former Marie "Maddy" Campbell; five children; a brother, U.S. Cmdr. Richard Bergen; and three grandchildren. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2001, at 2:30 at the AMEY FUNERAL HOME CHAPEL. Honorary pallbearers will be Frank Bergen, Douglas Bergen, Robert Phelps and Joshua Phelps. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent in his name to Hospice Austin.
