Viola G. Surprenant

Viola G. Surprenant, 96, of Rockwell Victorian Assisted Living, 221 Church St., died yesterday morning at North Adams Regional Hospital, where she had been a patient since July 7 after suffering a fall. She had been a resident of Williamstown since 1928. Born in Barton, Vt., on June 5, 1908, daughter of Clement J. and Nellie Aiken Sheltra, she and her family moved to Pittsfield, where she was a 1926 graduate of Pittsfield High School. Mrs. Surprenant was employed in the office of J.B. Estes Woodworking Co. in Hancock. She enjoyed reading, music, doing crossword puzzles and playing dominoes. In her earlier years, she played the piano and organ. Her husband, Raoul Surprenant, whom she married in 1928, died March 31, 1972. She leaves a daughter, Virginia Hass of Pownal, Vt.; a granddaughter, and two great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Viola Sheltra Surprenant will be Wednesday at 1 from St. Anthony's Church on Marshall Street, North Adams. Burial will follow the Mass at Southlawn Cemetery in South Williamstown. Relatives and friends may call at GEORGE M. HOPKINS FUNERAL HOME, 61-67 Spring St., Williamstown, tonight from 6 to 8. Memorial contributions may be made to the Berkshire Humane Society through the funeral home. She also leaves her son-in-law, Ernest Hass; granddaughter, Kathleen, and her husband, Larry Turoczy, and great-grandchildren, Timothy James and Sara Kate Turoczy, all of Adams. She was a quiet, frail, but exceptionally strong person, who will be greatly missed.
