Joan M. Whitaker, 72, of 2155 Cape St., East Lee, died Friday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Housatonic on Oct. 25, 1931, daughter of Harry and Irene Girard Norton, she was a 1949 graduate of the former Searles High School and attended Our Lady of the Elms College. A longtime Avon sales representative, Mrs. Whitaker also worked as a sales representative for New England Telephone Co. in Great Barrington and Springfield during the 1950s. She was a communicant of St. Mary's Church. She and her husband, Walter J. Whitaker, were married Sept. 3, 1955. Besides her husband, she leaves three daughters, Susan W. Baker of Tyringham, and Eileen A. Ranzoni and Diane K. Scarpa, both of Lee; two sisters, Elaine LaBonte of Tampa, Fla., and Ann Caine of Springfield; four grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Joan M. Whitaker, who died Sept. 17, 2004, will be Tuesday at 9:15 from KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 at St. Mary's Church. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visiting hours will be tomorrow, Sept. 20, from 4 to 7 at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to Shriners' Hospital in Springfield in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee, MA 01238. She also leaves her devoted sons-in-law, Ken, John and Lee; her beloved grandchildren, Paula, Mat, Lisa and Michael; her great-granddaughter, Isolena, and her sister-in-law, Irene Norton. She was predeceased by a brother, Edward Norton.
