Nellie Alzina Mead

Nellie Alzina Mead, 86, of State Road died yesterday afternoon at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing, where she had resid-ed since August. Born in Lee on Oct. 25, 1917, daughter of Floyd and Pearl Loomis Johnson, she was a 1935 graduate of the former Searles High School. Mrs. Mead had been employed as head of the cafeteria at Searles Middle School for many years, where she was known for her lasagna and rolls. She enjoyed gardening and spending time with animals, especially her dog, Nike. Her husband, Andrew H. Mead, whom she married June 13, 1936, in Great Barrington, died April 10, 1972. She leaves four sons, Andrew E. Mead of Gilbert, Ariz., and Great Barrington, Thomas H. Mead and Rodney P. Mead, both of Great Barrington, and Robert A. Mead of Lee; a sister, Eva Hart of Arizona, 14 grandchildren, and 19 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Nellie A. Mead, 86, of State Road died Sept. 21, 2004. The family will receive friends Thursday, Sept. 23, from 4 to 7 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME. The funeral will be conducted Friday, Sept. 24 at 11 at the funeral home by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor of First Congregational Church. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. She also leaves her daughters-in-law, Edna Mead, Nancy Mead, Carol Mead and Laurie Mead. She was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, Lloyd and Clarence Johnson. Nellie loved caring for her family and friends.
