Hollis Hodges

Hollis Hodges, 84, of Heaton Court died early yesterday morning at Great Barrington Rehabilitation and Nursing Center in Great Barrington, where he had been a resident for the past month. Born in Terre Haute, Ind., on April 23, 1920, son of Frederick W. and Frances Lane Hodges, he was a graduate of Wydy High School and earned a bachelor of arts degree in sociology from Columbia University in New York. An Army veteran of World War II, he served as a staff sergeant in the Pacific theater. He enlisted the day after Pearl Harbor and served in China and India for 2 1/2 years, earning two Bronze Stars for valor. He also served in the United States for a year. Mr. Hollis moved to Stockbridge in 1962 and worked for the Berkshire County Department of Social Services for more than 16 years. Before that, he worked in Washington, D.C., as an information specialist for nine years. He leaves a son, Jeffrey William Hodges of New York City; a daughter, Fran Clark of Fairfield, Iowa; two granddaughters, and his former wife, Katherine Kurtz Hodges of Brewster. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Friends are invited to a memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 16, 2004, at 2 at FINNERTY & STEVENS FUNERAL HOME in Great Barrington. There will be no calling hours. He was well-known for his sense of humor and his love of children and animals. His many friends will remember him as a warm and wise man. He leaves two granddaughters, Rebecca and Colette. He was predeceased by three brothers, Harold, John and Howard, and his sister, Hildred "Itsy" Drew.
