Edward C. McCormick

Retired Deputy Fire Chief Edward C. McCormick, 83, formerly of 8 Pleasantview Drive, died yesterday at Fairview Hospital. He had been a resident of the Laurel Lake Center for Health and Rehabilitation in Lee for a year. Born in Great Barrington on Dec. 28, 1917, son of Edward and Anna Hill McCormick, he was a 1935 graduate of the former Searles High School. Mr. McCormick was sales manager of the former Taconic Building Supply Co. on Railroad Street for 26 years. During the 1940s, he co-owned Nugent & McCormick Dry Cleaners and also worked at the former Roberts Service Station. He served in the Fire Department for 50 years, rising from lieutenant to captain to deputy chief. He was known as the "Father of Engine One" by the department for his devotion to that fire truck. He retired in 1987. Mr. McCormick was a communicant of Corpus Christi Church in Housatonic and a Little League, Babe Ruth and Biddy Basketball coach. He was a longtime member and former member of the board of governors at Wyantenuck Country Club. He enjoyed playing golf and watching sports. He and his wife, the former Ethel Smith, were married Oct. 3, 1941. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Edward G. McCormick, Great Barrington town moderator, and two grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday, April 30, at 9:30 from HICKEY-ROY FUNERAL HOME, with a Liturgy of Christian Burial at 10 in All Saints' Church, Housatonic, celebrated by the Rev. Anthony J. Jutt, pastor of Corpus Christi and All Saints' Church. Burial will follow in St. Peter's Cemetery. Calling hours will be tomorrow from 3 to 6. Donations may be made to the Southern Berkshire Emergency Training Facility in care of Great Barrington Fire Association, 20 Castle St., Great Barrington, MA 01230. Mr. McCormick also leaves two grandchildren, Matthew S. McCormick and Kathleen M. McCormick, both of Charlestown, Mass.
