William E. Davis Sr., 87

NORTH ADAMS, Mass. — William Edward Davis Sr., 87, of 7 Murray Ave. died Tuesday evening, Oct. 12, 2004, at North Adams Regional Hospital, where he had been admitted earlier in the day. Death followed a short illness. Born in North Adams on April 8, 1917, son of Fred T. and Dora Roscoe Davis, he was a graduate of the former St. Joseph's High School. An Army Air Forces veteran of World War II, he served with the 511th Squadron, 351st Bombardment Group, 8th Air Force, in the European theater. He participated in campaigns in Normandy, northern France, Germany, central Europe and the Ardennes. He was honorably discharged as a staff sergeant on Oct. 6, 1945. He received the European-African-Middle Eastern campaign medal with six battle stars. Mr. Davis was employed at GE in Pittsfield, retiring in 1981. He was a communicant of St. Francis' Church. He was a member of Dr. George L. Curran Post 996 VFW and enjoyed hunting and fishing. His wife, the former Mary S. Antenucci, whom he married July 16, 1945, died Oct. 16, 1997. He leaves two sons, William E. Davis Jr. and James A. Davis, with whom he made his home, both of North Adams; a daughter, Donna M. Gwin of Palm Springs, Calif., and a grandson, Scott W. LeBeau. Two sisters and one brother are deceased, Viola Hinkell, Grace Davis and Harold Davis. FUNERAL NOTICE — A private funeral for Mr. Davis will be held at FLYNN & DAGNOLI-MONTAGNA HOME FOR FUNERALS, Central Chapels, 74 Marshall St., North Adams. There will be no calling hours. Donations may be made to the CCU Unit at North Adams Regional Hospital in care of the funeral home.
