Mildred L. Holmes

Mildred L. Holmes, 82, of 465 Chapel St. died Thursday, Nov. 18, at the Laurel Lake Nursing Center. Born in Rockland, Maine, on Oct. 4, 1922, daughter of Fred and Louise Pierson Townsend, she was educated in schools there. Mrs. Holmes enlisted in the Army Air Corp with the WAC during World War II, serving from Feb. 8, 1944, until being discharged on Dec. 11, 1945, with the rank of corporal. After the service, she returned to Rockland and was employed at Bath Iron Works in Bath, Maine, as a welder. She moved to Marlboro in 1955 and to Lee in 1963. She was a member of St. George's Episcopal Church. Her husband, Ansil L. Holmes, whom she married April 1951, died July 13, 1972. She leaves a son, Wayne L. Holmes of Pittsfield; a daughter, Bonita M. Greenwood of Canaan, Conn.; a brother, Philip Townsend of Lee; a sister, Beverly Davis of Niantic, Conn.; seven grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Mildred Holmes will be Tuesday, Nov. 23, at 12:30 from the KELLY FUNERAL HOME in Lee, with a funeral service at 1 at St. George's Episcopal Church with the Rev. Canon Noel A. Bailey, rector, officiating. Burial will follow in Fairmount Cemetery. Visiting hours at the funeral home will be Monday from 4 to 7. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing may make donations to the St. George's Handicap Ramp Fund in her memory in care of the funeral home, 3 Main St., Lee 01238.
