Dorothy May Brazie

Dorothy May Brazie, 92, formerly of 2 Bernard Gibbons Drive and 25 Pleasant St., died Saturday at Great Barrington Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, where she had resided since October 2003. Born in Coeymans Hollow, N.Y., on Oct. 6, 1912, daughter of Leo and Georgia Shear Hollenbeck, she was adopted at the age of 12 by Horace A. and Eva J. Harris and moved to Great Barrington, where she graduated from the former Searles High School in 1931. She also took nurse's training at the former House of Mercy Hospital in Pittsfield. Mrs. Brazie was employed by Fairview Hospital in the housekeeping department, and by Willowood Nursing Home in Monterey and Great Barrington Nursing Home as a laundress. She was the caregiver for Leo Larkin at his home in Great Barrington and, in 1972, worked at the Great Barrington Senior Center. In 1978, she became a worker under the federal Green Thumb program, and in 1989, was a dispatcher for Southern Berkshire Elderly Transportation. She was a member of First Congregational Church and of its choir for 46 years. She was formerly on the church's lay leadership, mission and service committees and was a Sunday school teacher. She volunteered at the Senior Center, where she poured coffee every day at lunch, and enjoyed bowling. Her husband, Maurice A. Brazie, whom she married Jan. 3, 1939, died April 27, 1992. She leaves two sons, William Brazie of Wakefield, Neb., and Horace A. Brazie of Enosburg Falls, Vt.; a daughter, Georgia May Hedden of Luray, Va.; 14 grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Dorothy May Brazie, who died Saturday, Dec. 4, 2004, will be conducted Wednesday, Dec. 8 at 11 at First Congregational Church by the Rev. Charles VanAusdall, pastor. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. The family will receive friends tomorrow, Dec. 7, from 4 to 7 at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME, 33 South St., Great Barrington. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Dorothy's memory may be made to either the organ fund or the manse fund of First Congregational Church, both in care of the funeral home. She was predeceased by a sister and two brothers.
