Kathryn Niarchos

Kathryn Sares Niarchos, 82, formerly of Brainard Road, Enfield, Conn., and Pittsfield, died Friday at Parkway Pavilion Healthcare Facility in Enfield. She and her husband, James A. "Steve" Niarchos, owned the Soda Chef Restaurant in Pittsfield for 25 years before moving to Enfield in 1976. Born in Easthampton on Aug. 16, 1918, daughter of Peter and Anna Frentzos Sares, she graduated from Classical High School in Springfield in 1936. Mrs. Niarchos also worked at the former Steiger's Department Store for 15 years. She served at the Cathedral of St. George's Greek Orthodox Church in Springfield and received an award for her years of service. While in Enfield, she was a member of St. Nicholas' Greek Orthodox Church. Mr. Niarchos died in November 1974. The couple were married Sept. 19, 1937, in St. George's Hellenic Orthodox Church in Springfield. She leaves a daughter, Elaine A. Parakilas of Enfield; a son, Arthur J. Niarchos of Orange, Conn.; a sister, Viola Megas of Springfield; eight grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
