Ruth Margaret "Pat" Dempsey

Ruth Margaret "Pat" Dempsey, 87, of 11 Fairview Terrace died Thursday at Berkshire Medical Center in Pittsfield. Born in Pittsfield on June 29, 1917, daughter of Charles E. and Ruth M. Volk Patterson, she attended Great Barrington schools and graduated from the former Searles High School in 1935. She earned a degree in physical therapy in 1937 from the former New Haven (Conn.) College of Physical Therapy and X-ray. She also resided in Canaan, Conn., then in Warwick, Conn., from 1951 until returning to Great Barrington in 1976. Mrs. Dempsey was employed as a physical therapist at King County Nursing Home in Warwick, retiring in 1971. She also had worked at Fairview Hospital and the former Geer Memorial Hospital in North Canaan, Conn., now Geer Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. She was a member of St. James' Episcopal Church, the National Physical Therapy Association, the Thursday Morning Club and the Adams-Budz VFW Post 8183 Ladies' Auxiliary in Housatonic. She enjoyed knitting, needlepoint, gardening, golf, spending winters in Florida and her Scottish terriers. She leaves her husband, John H. Dempsey, whom she married March 25, 1941, in St. James' Episcopal Church. FUNERAL NOTICE -- The funeral for Ruth Margaret "Pat" Dempsey, who died Thursday, Dec. 30, 2004, will be conducted Tuesday, Jan. 4, at noon at BIRCHES-ROY FUNERAL HOME by the Rev. Catherine Wood Richardson. A calling hour will be held from 11 until the time of the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, expressions of sympathy in Mrs. Dempsey's memory may be made to St. James' Episcopal Church in care of the funeral home, 33 South St., Great Barrington 01230. She also leaves her godchild, Marcia Cook of Southfield.
