CAROLYN D. SCHOONMAKER

Carolyn D. Schoonmaker, 74, of Alford, died December 19, 2000 at Fairview Manor in Great Barrington. Born on September 11, 1926 in Winsted, CT, she was the daughter of Kenneth R. and Dorothy (Moore) Phillips. She was educated in Winsted Schools, and attended Winsted High School. Carolyn married Ward A. Schoonmaker, Sr. on November 18, 1947 in Colebrook, CT. The couple lived in Colebrook until 1956. In her youth, Carolyn, had traveled with her mother testing milk on local farms, this helped when the couple purchased the former Star Valley Farm and moved to Alford in 1956. Mr. Schoonmaker died on September 17, 1990. In the beginning, Carolyn helped on the farm doing chores and helping with the bigger farm operations. Later, as her children got older, she became more involved with the running of the farm and took over the bookkeeping, and other duties. Carolyn enjoyed both her flower and vegetable gardens, and also grew Christmas Cactus. She was an artist who worked in ceramics, painted, and sketched. Carolyn D. Schoonmaker is survived by her four children; Ward A. Schoonmaker, Jr., of Alford; Wayne Schoonmaker, of Alford; Robin Bennett, of Ashely Falls, and Colleen Gennari of Housatonic. Her sister, Barbara Phillips, of Orange, CT; nine grandchildren; Sherry, Brian, Wayne, Nicholas, Eric, Jennifer, Lynn, Jordan, and Julian, and one greatgrandson, Peter. Another son, Larry Schoonmaker, died in 2000. Funeral services will be held, Friday, December 22, 2000 at 2 PM at the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, with the Rev. James Chase and Deacon Daniel Miller, officiating. The family will receive friends on Thursday, December 21, from 4 until 7 PM, at the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home. Those who desire may make memorial contributions to the Dialysis Unit of BMC, in care of the Finnerty & Stevens Funeral Home, 426 Main Street, Great Barrington, MA 01230.
