Dr. Harold Perkel

Dr. Harold Perkel, 86, of North Wynnewood Ave., Wynnewood, Pa., and Stockbridge Bowl, died Tuesday at his home in Wynnewood of lung cancer. Born in Jersey City, N.J., on Jan. 15, 1918, son of Joseph and HenriettaPerkel, he was a 1934 graduate of Dickinson High School there. He also graduated from the University of Michigan in 1938 and, in 1944, from the New York University School of Medicine. He resided in Bayonne, N.J., until moving to Stockbridge in 1994. An Army veteran of World War II, he was stationed in the Philippines, Okinawa and Japan and held the rank of captain. A military doctor, he enlisted after medical school. Dr. Perkel had a pediatric practice in Bayonne and Jersey City from 1949 until retiring in 1994. He was chief of pediatrics at Bayonne Hospital for many years, and was a former chairman of the hospital's bioethics committee. He devoted the latter part of his career to caring for children with learning disabilities. In the 1980s, he was named New Jersey's Humanitarian of the Year for his work with handicapped children. He enjoyed classical music, going to Tanglewood in Lenox, reading literature and watching basketball. He and his wife, the former Helen Lieb, were married in 1943. Besides his wife, he leaves two sons, John Perkel of Brookline and West Stockbridge and Dr. Robert Perkel of Narberth, Pa., and West Stockbridge; a sister, Maita Fischer of Cranbury, N.J., and two grandchildren. FUNERAL NOTICE -- Services for Dr. Harold Perkel, who died Jan. 4, 2005, will be held at 11 at Temple Beth Am in Bayonne on Friday, Jan. 7. Donations may be made to the Fund for the Future of Family Medicine, Thomas Jefferson University, 1015 Walnut St., Philadelphia, PA 19107 and the Center for Children with Special Needs, c/o Liberty Health Foundation, 355 Grand Street, Jersey City, NJ 07302. He also leaves his daughters-in-law, Barbara and Madeline, and grandchildren, Julia and Michael.
